Many contemporary artists are now painting without necessarily using painterly materials or techniques. Some are re-visiting the questions inherent in painting (colour, grid, rhythm, light, composition) starting with the object or industrial materials and diverting painting towards the three-dimensional, making use of sound and/or image. Or they are dematerializing painting or applying it to the urban environment, working on the floor or ground or in situ. They have in a way dumped the canvas and the brush, abandoning the conventional picture in a quest for greater freedom in terms of the supports, materials and tools employed. They are once again moving painting outside its traditional domain into the realm of space and architecture, taking it further just as the constructivists and neoplasticists did before them; but using the means appropriate to the era of the digital image, sound and the composite material, producing the overlap between the functional and the decorative that is a feature of this design- and object-oriented society in which we live.
